The process of making Tungsten Bands is fairly involved. It starts out with Tungsten, carbon and other elements (like nickel) being ground into a powder. This mixed Tungsten Carbide powder is then compressed into a ring blank. These blanks are then forged under high pressure in an oxygen-free furnace. This furnace is usually up around 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire process results in a solid dull blank. These blanks are indestructible and scratch proof.

At this point the Tungsten Rings are individually hand crafted. Skilled workers use a variety of diamond abrasives and poly crystalline diamond tools to work on these rings. It’s similar to the cutting and polishing of rough diamonds.

Each new Tungsten ring will go through a multiple stage cutting and grinding process. Diamond tipped cutting and grinding tools are used throughout this process due the extreme hardness of the Tungsten Carbide. After the cutting, each new rings is polished with a diamond compound that results in a permanent shine that is not possible with other metals used in jewelry such as gold, silver or platinum. The extreme hardness of the Tungsten Carbide ring blanks require the use of the special diamond cutting, grinding, and polishing tools. The resulting shine, brilliance and luster will last forever with little to no signs of wear. It’s part of the reason so many people find that Tungsten rings perfect for everyday wear both on and off the job.

As you continue to research various rings you’ll find some styles of Tungsten Bands that have been inlaid with gold, silver, platinum or copper. This unique look is achieved by skillfully grinding a channel in the center of the ring. The complementary metal is then pressed into this channel under extreme pressure. The resulting look is unique and increasingly popular.

This unique process of creating Tungsten Bands results in rings that are both eye catching and durable.

What is Tungsten?

In my previous post I was talking a bit about Tungsten Bands. A little was discussed about the rising popularity of these incredible rings as well as some basic information about them. Today I’m going to dig a little deeper into what Tungsten itself is. If we didn’t have Tungsten, we couldn’t have such cool Tungsten Rings.

According to Wikipedia “In 1781, Carl Wilhelm Scheele ascertained that a new acid could be made from scheelite (at the time named tungstenite): tungstic acid. Scheele and Torbern Bergman suggested that it could be possible to obtain a new metal by reducing this acid. In 1783, José and Fausto Elhuyar found an acid made from wolframite that was identical to tungstic acid. Later that year, in Spain, the brothers succeeded in isolating tungsten through reduction of this acid with charcoal. They are credited with the discovery of the element.”

Tungsten is a chemical element that has the symbol ‘W’. Its atomic number is 74 on the periodic chart. So why is the symbol ‘W’? Well, Tungsten is the commonly accepted name of this material however, some chemist prefer to call it ‘wolfram’ because of its ore wolframite. It is found in several ores including wolframite, seelite, and Ferberite Hübnerite. “Tungsten” comes from the Swedish tung sten meaning “heavy stone.”

Tungsten is often described as being grayish white, lustrous in appearance. Others describe it as steel gray.

Tungsten has the highest melting point of all the non-alloyed (not mixed with other element) metals and the second highest of all the elements after carbon. It’s often brittle and hard to work with. In its pure form it can be cut with a hacksaw.

Tungsten by itself is a very hard and dense metal. Tungsten gains extreme hardness by being combined with a carbon alloy, creating Tungsten Carbide. This gives it a hardness rating between 8.5 and 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (Diamonds are a 10, the highest).

The Tungsten Carbide is the preferred material used to make a lot of the Tungsten Bands you find today. Its extreme durability and ability to maintain its shine are some of the main reasons for it’s popularity.

In a future post we’ll explore the uses of Tungsten and the processes used to make those great looking bands you find.
